Abstract
UAV systems used automated pilots which can be configured based on the mission. The entry level market for this type of systems is not focus mainly on fixed-wing configurations.On this paper we asses, develop and simulate missions for an automated piloting system, built on a Cube Orange architecture. The flight controller is mounted on a fixed-wing twin-engine airplane built using additive manufacturing technologies. For the management and simulation of UAV mission we use Mission Planner, and open-source software from ArduPilot. The missions is simulated to obtain an improvement of the automated piloting system, evaluate the terrain from the flight path, avoid dangers, keep out of restricted areas and find the optimal routes
Description
This paper presents the design, implementation, and testing of an automated pilot system mounted on a fixed-wing, twin-engine UAV. The mission management is carried out using the Cube Orange flight controller integrated with the ArduPilot open-source autopilot platform.
The study describes how flight missions are created, monitored, and optimized with the Mission Planner software, focusing on:
route planning for reconnaissance and surveillance missions;
terrain evaluation and obstacle avoidance along the trajectory;
avoidance of restricted or dangerous airspace;
optimization of flight paths for energy efficiency and mission reliability.
The UAV platform was developed using additive manufacturing technologies, enabling weight reduction and modular integration of avionics. The experimental results highlight the UAV’s capacity to execute autonomous missions, with real-time adjustments of navigation parameters and mission profiles.
The research demonstrates the feasibility of integrating low-cost, open-source autopilot solutions into complex UAV platforms, offering a flexible framework for future applications in aerial surveillance, mapping, and civil/military missions.
